The Association for a Better New York (ABNY) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the constant growth and renewal of New York City's people, businsses, and communities. Created in response to the New York City fiscal crisis in the 1970's, ABNY continues to bring together leaders from government, business, labor, non-profit, education, healthcare, sports & entertainment, and tourism to solve the problems of the day and keep the city moving forward. 

The 2020 Census is of critical importance to New York, as tens of billions of our state and city budgets are derived from population-based funding programs. The upcoming census is complicated by the addition of a proposed citizenship question on the census form, the migration from paper forms to mostly online, the reduction in federal resources for staffing and offices, and a reduction in outreach to New York's already hard-to-count populations. The outcome of these changes may result in the loss of billions of dollars to New York and the loss of 1-2 congressional seats. 

In an effort to help New York City and State achieve the most accurate census count possible, ABNY is implementing a two-year strategic plan to ensure a fair and accurate 2020 decennial census count. To accomplish this, ABNY has formed an organizing and action committee comprised of corporate, non-profit, community, and union leaders. It is ABNY's objective to achieve three primary goals: 1) maximize the census self-response rate in 2020; 2) help New Yorkers complete the census form; and 3) work to ensure confidentiality and privacy protects under Title 13 of the United States Code. 

ABNY seeks a smart and energetic coordinator to assist ABNY in executing a plan to help New York achieve a successful count in 2020. The coordinator will work with ABNY's Executive Vice President who is leading this effort, to manage the private, non-profit, labor, educational, and institutional sectors in New York that are working to educate the public on the importance of participating in the 2020 Census. 

The Census 2020 Coordinator will: 

Coordination: 

  • Work with the ABNY Board, ABNY Census Organizing and Action Committee and Executive Vice President to coordinate and manage the execution of teh ABNY Census Work Plan
  • Manage outreach and coordination between various partners, organizations, community groups, public sector/agencies, and coalitions to ensure effective participation 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with ABNY 2020 Census partners, resources, and tools to provide coordination of the effort 
  • Attend and coordinate meetings and provide logistics for events related to the citywide Census 2020 campaign 
  • Coordinate and assist in the execution of public events and meetings to promote the participation of census partners including event logistics, book vendors, and manage attendee lists

 

Communications:

  • Work with census partners to manage a public communications strategy, messaging, and education campaign to keep partners engaged
  • Manage census partner and internal communications to coordinate input, participation, skills, and resources 
  • Prepare and coordiante communication materials including mailings to email distribution lists
  • Maintain and grow ABNY's Census social media presence using various platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.

 

Other Responsibilities: 

  • Manage day-to-day relationships with census partners through communication, events, and meetings
  • Provide a variety of supportive day-to-day services as directed by the Executive Vice President 
  • Act as a representative on behalf of the Census effort, prepare and submit materials for hearings, press conferences, and op-eds, and participate in other public appearances 
  • May supervise interns 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Strong interest in New York City and State civic and public policy issues preferred 
  • Experience in stakeholder/community organizing, public policy, urban planning, and/or event planning preferred 
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Strong work ethic and judgement, highly organized, able to work flexibly and under pressure, and able to work independently
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrable experience with Word and Excel programs, Google Suite, database programs, and willingness to use HTML and InDesign
